Bernini’s Ecstasy of Saint Teresa presents us with a visual of Saint Teresa of Avila in the throes of religious ecstasy as an angel pierces her with the love of God. When we remove the robes that mask her body and remove the secondary divine character in this depiction, the religious messaging is discarded and we are left with a woman in the throes of the female orgasm.
